The Ethiopian calendar is “right” in the sense that it is a complete, internally consistent calendar system with very ancient historical roots. The Ethiopian calendar comes from the ancient Alexandrian/Coptic calendar tradition and ultimately from the Egyptian solar calendar. It has 13 months: 12 months of 30 days, plus Pagumen/Pagume with 5 days, or 6 in a leap year. Its leap-year system keeps it closely aligned with the solar year. The main reason Ethiopia is currently about 7–8 years behind the Gregorian calendar is not because Ethiopia “lost” years. It comes from an ancient disagreement over the calculation of the date of the Annunciation/incarnation and therefore the year of Jesus Christ’s birth. Ethiopian Christianity retained an Alexandrian chronology, while Western Europe eventually adopted a different calculation associated with Dionysius Exiguus. So, for example, what the Gregorian calendar calls 2026 corresponds largely to 2018–2019 in the Ethiopian calendar, depending on the date. There are several reasons someone could argue that the Ethiopian calendar has a particularly strong historical claim: It preserves an older Christian/Ethiopian/EGYPTIAN calendar tradition instead of adopting the later Gregorian reform. Its months are extremely regular: 30 days × 12, plus a short 13th month. Its New Year remains connected to the ancient solar/Alexandrian calendar cycle. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church preserved its chronology independently for many centuries. Ethiopia was never required to replace its traditional calendar completely with the European Gregorian system. But one important distinction is necessary: a calendar measures and labels time; it does not create time. The Earth does not know whether the year is called 2019, 2026, 1448 AH, 5786 AM, or something else. Those year numbers depend on the historical starting point—or epoch—chosen by each civilization. So the strongest statement is: The Ethiopian calendar is not “seven years wrong.” It uses a different historical chronology. And if your deeper question is “Could the Ethiopian calculation of Christ’s birth actually be historically more accurate than the Gregorian AD calculation?”, that becomes much more interesting—because historians already know that the conventional Gregorian AD 1 probably does not correspond exactly to Jesus’ actual birth year.
