🌍 For generations, millions of people have grown up looking at world maps that make Africa appear far smaller in comparison with Europe, North America, Greenland and other northern regions. But Africa was never small. The problem is the Mercator projection, created in 1569 for navigation. It dramatically enlarges territories closer to the poles, changing how we visually compare them with Africa. Now the world is beginning to correct that picture. On 4 September 2026, the United Nations General Assembly backed the “Correct the Map” initiative, encouraging governments, schools, international organisations and technology companies to use map projections that represent the relative size of countries and continents more accurately. The Equal Earth projection is one of the major alternatives being promoted. Why does this matter for Africa? 🌍 IDENTITY — African children deserve to see their continent represented in its true global scale. 📚 EDUCATION — The maps we learn from shape how we understand geography, nations and the world. 🧠 PERCEPTION — Visual size can unconsciously influence how people perceive importance, power and relevance. 💼 ECONOMIC THINKING — Africa is not a small market on the edge of the world. It is a continent of more than 30 million km², containing enormous human, cultural and economic potential. 🌐 GLOBAL POSITIONING — Correct representation strengthens the message that Africa deserves its proper place in global institutions, technology, trade and investment. 👑 DIGNITY — Africa should not have to see itself through a distorted representation inherited from another era. Africa is approximately 14 times larger than Greenland, even though traditional Mercator maps can make them appear surprisingly similar in size. This is bigger than changing a map. It is about changing perception. Changing education. Changing the narrative. And allowing a new generation to see Africa at its true scale.
